In a previous blog I spoke about “Objections and Sales being like Peas and Carrots” (a la Forrest Gump). You always find them together!!
Well, another 2 things you always find together are ACHIEVEMENT and SACRIFICE!
I do not believe that anyone wins a gold medal at the Olympics simply by “turning up”. There is a lifestyle of sacrifice attached to that win. Hours and hours of time, training, preparing, visualizing, spending time away from families and loved ones in the process of getting there.
One of my favorite sports people is Usain Bolt. Apart from being an amazing athlete he was also a stunning personality and ambassador for his sport. It can be said that his fame and fortune were earned in 10 or 20 second burst depending on the race he was running. It would however be totally untrue! Usain Bolt spent hours training. Countless hours strengthening, training, practicing , studying his technique to find the milliseconds that would give him the edge.
Now not all of us are striving to get Gold Medals at the Olympics BUT I am totally convinced that the metaphor works equally well for business and especially for Sales.
I am a HUGE believer in setting goals. Most high achievers that I get to speak to all are deliberate about setting goals. I am convinced that the person who sets goals will consistently achieve more than those who don’t.
The challenge however is to accept that, in order to achieve my goal, there is a price to pay. Unfortunately, our industry…SALES… is plagued by massive numbers of hopefuls thinking that they are going to win … Just by turning up!! Relying on their ability to talk, their sparkling personality and extrovert tendencies, without realizing that none of those are in fact, that helpful at all!!
What will get you across the line, so to speak….FHW… Freeking Hard Work!
Spend some time thinking carefully through the goals you’ve chosen (or are thinking about choosing) , on the understanding that they are going to take some time and effort to achieve. Ask yourself if you are really prepared to put in that time and effort! (and there’s no shame if you’re not – just follow goals you are prepared to invest the time and effort into!)
Of equal importance is … do your family and loved ones understand the importance of that goal to you and the price you are expecting THEM to pay?
“ARE YOU PREPARED TO PAY THE PRICE?”
Just some thoughts
Go for those goals !
